Facilitation Regional Training Workshop for Asia and Pacific Region

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations are among the most complex multilateral processes. Arriving at negotiated outcomes between 196 countries is further complicated by the significant imbalance in resources and capabilities differentiating the developed and developing countries delegation. It works to level the playing field for negotiators from vulnerable developing countries by helping them improve their knowledge of the UNFCCC decision- making process so that they can engage in it effectively and translate its outcomes into national level policy.

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the LDC Group, and the Prakriti Resources Centre (PRC) will organize the UNFCCC Capacity Building Regional Training Workshop for climate change Negotiators in Nepal. The workshop will bring together participants from Asia and Pacific countries, with a primary focus on LDCs, and will be organized in the first week of October 2024. Based on previous experience of organizing the workshops in 2019 and 2023 in Kathmandu, Nepal, this time also, PRC will take responsibility for the organization, in particular arranging and implementing the logistics and liaison with the government and co-designing the workshop’s agenda.

Objective:

This workshop aims to equip and empower delegates from the least developed countries and other Asia and Pacific countries. The specific objectives are:

  • Build capacity to participate in and influence the UNFCCC decision-making process
  • Strengthen the understanding of substantive and legal issues on the UNFCCC agenda
  • Develop and implement effective negotiating strategies, particularly through engaging in mock negotiating scenarios
  • Strengthen networks and communication structures to improve in-session coordination
