Dec 29, 2025Translating Loss and Damage Insights into National Action: Policy Co-Production in Nepal
Building on the evidence and insights generated by the IDRC-supported Strengthening Loss and Damage Response Capacity in the Global South (STRENGTH) project in Nepal, this initiative focuses on translating local loss and damage (L&D) experiences into actionable policy outcomes. Drawing from research in the Melamchi – Helambu region, the project responds to the growing recognition that recent catastrophic floods have led to significant loss and damage particularly Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD), including cultural loss, social disruption, and psychosocial distress, which remain largely unaddressed in existing recovery and policy frameworks. Despite the availability of robust local evidence, gaps persist in connecting community experiences with sub-national and national L&D policy processes.
Objectives
The project aims to strengthen policy co-production on loss and damage in Nepal by:
- Translating STRENGTH research and community-level evidence into policy-relevant outputs.
- Amplifying community voices, particularly those of women and marginalized groups, through visual and narrative documentation.
Facilitating collaboration between researchers and policymakers to co-develop a policy brief informed by lived experiences.
